In fact the simple client/server that Hauppauge provides, serves primarily a local MSIE "web site" redirected via rfb and integrating proprietary streaming audio and video to the mvp using java or activex scripting Before I found the mvpmc I had totally redrawn these pages to meet my needs. Another example of how this skinning works is the Beyond TV Skin project http://sourceforge.net/project/screenshots.php?group_id=107497 Before looking at other options, you should look at the hardware frame buffer, most devices can't offer more than 256 colours on screen at the same time.
