To recreate the problem,
* Boot a morphix 0.5 release (have tested basemodules
pre1, 4, 5) and choose "Copy media to ram" option from
boot menu
* Once booted, make sure that hdd swap is recognised
and available
* To monitor ram usage I run top in a window on top of
all other apps
* Do something memory intensive to load up the ram (big
text copies in an editor for example)
* Once ram limit is reached, the swap registers some
usage, then the display manager hangs
I've tested on different machines, and with different
mainmodules (pre1+KDE, pre4+LightGUI, pre5+KDE).
I've also been testing knoppix 3.8 CeBit and 3.8.1
which have the same problem.
I can switch between consoles (ie ctrl+alt+f1) to see
if there are any error messages being displayed, but
usually there are none. One exception was when firefox
was the app that caused the limit to be reached, and it
seg faulted.
Interestingly, If you do these tests without any swap
in use, it handles the memory overload really well - eg
with 1GB ram,2GBswap and the KDE iso I can load top,
firefox, and then it crashes when I try to run
openoffice (which pushes it over the limit)
However with no swap enabled, I can load up heaps of
apps, do big text copies in openoffice and it takes a
lot more work to make it crash.
