Well, I ruled out any browser cache problems. However, it must have been something about the messy way I installed and tinkered with the thing in the first place, because I finally decided to blow everything away, install it again *starting* with the latest SVN, and apply everything I had learned from the beginning, and now I can modify things correctly.
