I have seen in the past--and specifically with xAP and xPL listener sockets--that mh was "fragile" when system interrupts occurred during system calls like select. The issue was resolved specific to xPL and xAP; but, I have not personally looked at the guts of the serial code. I'm assuming that you've done the obvious things like ensure that any high-interrupt card isn't sharing an interrupt w/ your serial port and that high-interrupt devices have been temporarily disabled while troubleshooting. At a minimum, I'd try swapping whatever serial port you're currently using w/ another one that is likely to be using a different interrupt. I would also look at any new device drivers that may be running as a result of LinuxMCE and try temporarily disabling them to see if you can determine the source of incompatibility.
