I had a similar problem a few months ago. I am using FreeBSD 5.1 on the MH Box and the box was locking, after filling /var/log/messages with out of swapspace errors. Are you by chance using Light_Switch_Item for anything? That's what did it for me. I just disabled the code as I have not had time to look into it further.
