I am using the free DriverLINX Port I/O driver to access my printer port
like this:

use Win32::API;

my $ReadPortShort = new Win32::API("dlportio",
"DlPortReadPortUshort",[I],I);
my $WritePortShort = new Win32::API("dlportio",
"DlPortWritePortUshort",[I,I],I);

It can be used to read and write to all I/O ports in the range 0100H to
FFFFH.

but the authors website is long gone and unable to locate it elsewhere.

Does anyone have this module or perhaps another suggestion?
