I test my AHT, about 75 feet from the antenna (outside), using the turnstyle antenna designed by Dave Houston. In a 50 range, without a booster, I got very good signal. http://www.laser.com/dhouston/Turnstile.htm Another difference between the BX24-AHt and the MR26, is the fact that it could run standalone coupled with a CM11a. No need for a computer to receive the RF signal, and then send to the line via the CM11a I can't tell about security signal, but I believe Alan do use it.
