Hi Richard, The way is to use a translation table. What you need in the header is something like: \usepackage[ansinew]{inputenc} What it does is let you use extended ANSI characters, like ä, but changes it to \"a before it is processed. This makes the source text easier to read and also works with spelling checkers. This is part of MiKTeX. I know this works in WinEdt, I am not sure if it will work in other editors.
