Can't tell why the file *was* so old, although I'm sure that there's a reason for it. Anyway, I updated (some) packages, now the formatting works smoothly; will see whether I'll have any compilation difficulties with my source code later (;-). Thanks again for the help. In one of my 2.8-installation latex.ltx if from september 2009.
