Gentlemen, Thanks for your replies. It was indeed the absence of an `\end' or `\bye' command that was causing the hitch. Believe it or not it was actually tex that prompted me to enter a `command' or `\end'. which seemed an odd thing to do in the command prompt, but there we are.
