Try the 'arydshln' package. I think this does what you want and is very powerful. For example, adding dashed lines between columns only for certain rows. If I got the name of the package slightly wrong, I think I originally found this by searching for 'dashed lines' in the CTAN catalogue. (It's always worth searching there first!) I have a matrix with almost the same formula's inside resulting from this it is not easy to see the separation of the individual cells. To make the separation more visible i need dashed vertical and horizontal lines to indicate the separation of columns and rows.
