If you need hardware support you need to port the drm modules, too.
Running Mesa without hardware support is much easier and a lot of  
platforms are already supported.

Supported Matrox cards are G200, G400, G450 and G550.
For a list of ATI chips you should look for "PCI_CHIP_*" in
src/drv/radeon/server/radeon_dri.c.
