It is essentially an API approved by the IEEE and ISO, and by designing a program to be POSIX compliant, a programmer has a reasonable assurance that porting the program to any POSIX compliant operating system should be a relatively minor task. (Most varieties of unix strive to be POSIX compliant, as does Windows NT.) While we're on the topic of portability, is there any reason why the MegaHAL build process is using just a simple Makefile as opposed to the autoconf/configure scripts? I've generally found that autoconf makes programs easier to build on *nix platforms. (Although granted, it probably wouldn't be of much help on Windows/DOS/Macs...) -- Cory Spencer <csp...@in...> |
