Luke, I don't have an answer to your question, but I can confirm what your seeing with the attached image. I generated this figure with MPL 1.1.0, Python 2.7.1, on Windows 7 with ipythonqt and the inline backend. I filed an issue here: https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/issues/680. If I find time tonight, I'll take a stab at tracking this down.
