Your script works fine for me, using the Qt4Agg backend (see
http://imgur.com/bCPfy.png)

You can determine which backend and Matplotlib/Basemap versions are
being used on your computer if you include the following in your
script:

import matplotlib as mpl
from mpl_toolkits import basemap

print mpl.get_backend()
print mpl.__version__
print basemap.__version__
