Thanks for looking into this -- it has been driving me crazy!
I tried running your much better code but ended up with the same

I checked and matplotlib is version 0.98.5.2, and your code doesn't
using dateutil so I guess that's not it.

Any other ideas?  I can't think of what else to try...
