Then it must not be *too* easy to find :-)

The legend command returns a legend instance

  leg = ax.legend(something...)

and you can find the legend methods at

  http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/matplotlib.legend.html

Specifically the "draw_frame" method

  leg.draw_frame(False)
