I also like the embedded ${\...} syntax. Too many spurious-looking
quotes confuse me and Emacs highlighting. ;-) 

And forgive the nitpicking but your replacement is not accurate:

  Bar w/foo: <& bar, text=>"embed_start '".$m->scomp('foo')."' embed_end" &>
