[Mason] interaction of $m->cache_self and static_source

mason users-

as part of optimizing an application i'm working on, i've added the
following to all the static components:

<%init>
return if $m->cache_self;
</%init>
-----

'static_source' is off for development purposes.

my question:  when a component has it's output cached, is there any way to
force it to re-read it's source when the source changes?  i thought that a
change in the source tree would take precedence over the component
caching, though that appears to not be the case.
