The main problem is, that the "wireless-key"-option (or > "wireless-enc") in /etc/network/interfaces doesn't function. Where is the reason for this problem? somebody else (perhaps on other ML?) already pointed out that on Debian you might need a section as follows in /etc/network/interfaces: (assuming a static IP and hex key) iface ath0 inet static address 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.0.254 up (iwconfig ath0 mode managed iwconfig ath0 rate 54M iwconfig ath0 channel 6 iwconfig ath0 key SECRETKEYDDCCCCBBBBAAAAXXXX restricted iwconfig ath0 essid MYHOMEESSID ) # or call external script, eg: # up /etc/network/wlan-up.sh IFACE MODE RATE CHAN KEY ESSID that's 'cuz wireless-* are set _before_ i'face is brought up, while it seems that many wlan cards accept iw* commands _after_ being up.
