But, I think that a mail is better to communicate version bumps, > since not everybody is always on IRC, and there are no logs of them. well, one of the main points of the proposal is that version bumps can happen pretty autonomously and non-disruptively... if two distros are working on a release near the same time, they probably can use the same version tag. if one gets a release out the door first, the second can still increment the version again after getting a few more fixes in. so, coordination is still strongly encouraged, but it isn't really a requirement, per se. alerting people on irc is mostly just to avoid commits in the middle of preparing, testing and tagging a version. and now i rant about how much i like this idea: having each distro increment the version number when they make a release for their distro means that no distro is beholden to another distro's release cycle, the arbitrary version number is basically an indicator that that particular version was useful to at least 1 distro, makes it easier to compare versions across distros, and encourages getting code upstream. > We should add those rules should be added to the wiki, in a developer > section, as a reference. indeed. live well, vagrant |
