You don't want to load lirc_serial. That is probably why lirc_sir did not load. Do a rmmod lirc_serial. After lirc_sir loads, run mode2. You should get data out when you press the remote buttons. The data mode2 shows are the pulses and spaces in useconds. These are typically between 400 and 1000. If you see real short ones(< 100) then something is broke. If that does not work, then let us know and we will try to figure out what IRDA hardware is used on the Thinkpad and if it has unique configuration needs.
