Hardwiring IR equipment...

I've been attempting to interface a particular piece of equipment (Dish
201 receiver) with my computer and have had very little luck.  My main
issue stems from the fact that Echostar uses a 57.6kHz carrier frequency
which seems to not work correctly with my IR transciever.  Giving it
some thought, I realised that I don't really want to have to be
converting signals to IR and back again and that what I really want is
some way to hardwire something like the UIRT into my receiver
essentially giving it a serial port.  Has anyone done anything like this
in the past?  Is this just newbie nonsense?  Any suggestions / advice /
wacks in the head will be greatly appreciated.
