I've looked into it a couple times and finally found something that worked (for me at least). I noticed that ir-kbd-i2c loaded correctly and found that it included this line, but lirc_i2c did not. Adding this one line fixed it. I have a Hauppauge PVR-150 on i686 Arch Linux. Simply apply this patch with patch -p0 -f or, if you're using arch, you can used the attached src package.
