Don't know if this applies, but I've seen some dodgy USB 1.x hubs that caused similar problems with certain devices plugged into them, and I've seen dodgy devices that were "fixed" by placing them behind a suitable hub. In general, there are situations where some USB devices and some hubs (including some root hubs) just don't get along (primarily USB 1.x devices). Changing the hub mix can sometimes help.
