Using a universal remote with the pinsys driver / receiver

Hi all,

I own a pinnacle systems infrared receiver and remote, but I don't
like the remote too much (I use it with freevo, and I need a weird
button mapping to get all the functions I need). I bought a universal
remote, but I can't get it to work reliably. It supports many brands,
and I tried a few, but it seems to be very difficult for the receiver
to distinguish the different buttons.

Is there a smart way to find out which brand to emulate? Can the
pinsys receiver detect different types of remotes?
