It's a good question and it's also quite funny to me, as I've built an IR receiver today, just to get rid of lirc_gpio, and it took me about half an hour (damn, so much time wasted. I should've done it years ago ;)). What I hope now is that lirc_serial won't be broken by the kernel changes in the near future. To be precise there were "problems" with 2.6.22 as well (oopses resulting in system instability) but the solution was to add: install lirc_serial /usr/bin/setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none && /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install lirc_serial to modprobe.conf.
