Can't get Creative CIMR-100 to work w/ irrecord

If I use the standard creative remote config I can operate my remote. 
However I'd like to use a different remote so I fire up

irrecord -d /dev/ttyS0 newconf.conf

When it asks to hold down any button the respond is

irrecord: unknown code

Now, I even tried using irrecord with the offical creative remote (the 
same one the conf comes for w/ lirc) and I get the same messages. I've 
tried adjusting the baud rate on the serial port with no luck. However 
if I set it to 9600 instead of irrecord: unknown code I now get 
irrecord: bad envelope.

Is there any other method I can obtain the correct codes for my remote 
w/o using irrecord? I can cat /dev/ttyS0 and see output. Is there any 
way I can simply use this data?
