Hi Jon,

Before you emerge lirc on gentoo, ensure that you have the following  
line in /etc/make.conf

LIRC_DEVICES="dvico"

this way, when lirc is emerged in, the dvico drivers are selected.  
The current version of lirc on gentoon is 0.8.0-r1.
