Powering the homebrew receiver

Has anyone tried to power the homebrew receiver off a USB port instead 
of using the voltage regulator?

I'd like to provide 2 LEDs; a power on and a signal received, using a 
version of this circuit:

but I don't have room for the battery (and besides, I think it's cheesy.)
