Ok, I think we finally got a lirc_serial module which will compile and work both on SMP boxes and single-processor. That's pretty much the only update I made, so if you need SMP support with lirc_serial, grab it at https://profilo.dyndns.org/lirc/ This patch was made against linux-2.6.0-test10, but should apply cleanly to just about any 2.6.0 series.
