There is an astonishingly simple solution which works with XFree86 4.2.0: Create a link to the device in /dev: cd /dev ln -s input/event0 wacom Now use /dev/wacom in your XF86Config. When the hotplugging gets in your way, just change the link. X11 will somehow notice that the device now works again and it will reactivate it (I have this problem with my USB mouse: Every time, I press the hotsync button of my PDA, the USB devices are changed.
