I had a similar problem under NetBSD-current. Save all the output from your build. On my machine, libtool refused (noisily) to make a .so because one of the libraries it depended on wasn't available as a .so. It was one of the X libraries (libXss maybe?). I just went into my X11 source and hacked around with the Imakefile and got it to build a .so version of the library. Then libtool no longer complained when building qt_gui and properly created the .so.
