You ought to look at Aqsis and Pixie, which are GPL'd RenderMan-compatible render engines (see the links section of the K-3D website). Try a minimal test case with each, and see what you get. FYI, we (currently) leave RIB files lying-around after rendering, look at your /tmp directory - having a minimal test case RIB file is a valuable troubleshooting tool, whether the problem is with the render engine or K-3D (I'm guessing it's the engine in this case).
