You might try gcc 3.0.2 - that's what I'm using right now on my RH 7.3 system, and I haven't had any troubles - 3.0.2 and 2.96 presumably create compatible binaries, and it may be that you're seeing some bug that was fixed between 2.96 and 3.0.2.
