SketchUp is not as limited as you suggest, but I'm not going to encourage you to use it by telling you how I get it to do what you want because it is not FOSS. :-) K-3D could see a huge leap in power just from having the ability to draw into surfaces with all the functionality of inkscape. i.e. the selected surface, viewport or plane is the artwork that the inkscape code sees, like a uvmap. Once you have finished you could then render the art to a texture or to K-3D geometry for use with the 3D tools.
