On the other hand, k3d::mesh is already getting unwieldy - it seems unrealistic to imagine that k3d::mesh can grow to become the union of all interesting geometric primitives. What this suggests to me is that k3d::mesh might become a container for gprim *plugins*, which would be an interesting project. For most sources / modifiers this could be a pretty small delta. I could imagine a modifier like MergeMesh changing considerably. Depending on the API serialization might need to be encapsulated in the gprim instances themselves.
