Does the python scripting engine have access to the bitmap objects? There is a whole class of patterns, that are are commonly seen in plants and animals, based on diffusion-reaction mechanisms, that are probably impossible to implement as as a renderman shader, basically anything related to cellular automation. This and other more general image processing tasks could be done by the scripting engines if they have access to the bitmap data in memory. A scripted bitmap object and a scripted bitmap transform required. Imagine taking geometry data and feeding it to a scripted bitmap object to produce a map (that can also be saved to disk). This would allow the generation of patterns as described in; Horne C.E. Geometric symmetry in patterns and tilings (ISBN 0849310482) And more importantly the work of Greg Turk; Generating Textures on Arbitrary Surfaces Using Reaction-Diffusion http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~turk/my_papers/reaction_diffusion.pdf There is a huge amount of information on Greg's home page http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~turk -- http://dan.3-e.net http://pic.3-e.net |
