librsvg is the library used by Gnome/GTK to handle SVG files (we don't 
get to choose).  You might check their site for documented limitations / 
recommendations on content.

hrefs to what?  The icons I've created in inkscape didn't require any 
tweaking.

Certainly both are aesthetically pleasing; I would tend to lean more 
towards gray, only because green could potentially take on some special 
meaning in the UI later on, just as red is now associated with 
selection.  Joe is the best judge on what might happen in this area ...
