I posted a bug for this (696961). ComparisonFailureTest indicates that the current behaviour of truncating common prefix and suffix from comparison failure messages is intentional. I'm currently experiencing several instances where this makes the failure message difficult to understand. What I propose is to provide a context of several characters (probably configurable from junit.properties?) instead of just the differing characters. If there are no objections, I can submit a patch.
