In 10pre7, in order to measure distances you need to double-click.

Double-click starts a measurement, and double-click ends a measurement.

To measure an angle you:
  double-click
  click
  double-click

To get this to work in the applet, I had to break the pre-existing code
that was accessible only in the application.

I have received feedback saying that there needs to be a measurement
'mode' where single-click will drop anchors within the applet. Therefore,
I will (reluctantly) reintroduce such a 'measurement mode' ... so the
behavior that you saw before with the measurement mode will be
reintroduced.
