Sara, In answer to your question, hydrogens are assigned to groups by attachment, not distance. Do check your version. Could be there was some bug at one point relating to this, but I don't see it now. Are you saying that with selectionHalos on you get that H highlighted both with select 232 and with select 227 ? I remember at one point we had the problem that Hs were not being added to groups, but that's been fixed long ago.
