Hi Jonathan Thanks for the kind words. Sorry not to get a chance to chat, but it's always great to put a face to a name familiar from postings on the jmol-users list. As I said, our current policy doesn't include use of the signed applet since we manage all the file loading and saving server-side to preserve the content in the journal archive; but we're not inflexible about that if we perceive or learn of community requirements for use of the signed applet. On the other hand, we also don't want to frighten off prospective readers with the "threatening" messages that some browsers emit when the signed applet is first used! Regarding standardisation of an appropriate graphical language, I suspect Jmol has a lot to contribute because of its very clean and well-behaved state description (probably a corollary of an appropriately high-level scripting language). Does anyone on this list have experience of the SBEVSL initiative (http://sbevsl.sourceforge.net)? If not, I could certainly approach them to see what the current status of this project is. It looks dormant, but the principal investigator is a long-time supporter of IUCr software development activities in the CIF area, and may be amenable to re-engagement in such a project.
