Oh, now that I re-read my own post I see the difference causing the failure:
the unsigned applet prepends the absolute path of the server, while the 
signed applet does not (and so it goes to the root of my hard disk, I guess).

Still don't see where the difference comes from. Is it Jmol.js maybe?
