JAMWiki 1.2 Released

Seven months after the release of JAMWiki 1.1, the brand-spanking-new JAMWiki 1.2 release (code name "Nevernude") is now available for download from SourceForge. This release is a major release that contains significant new features as well as bug fixes and enhancements including:

* UI and usability changes. A new JAMWiki:Header topic allows administrators to add shared text to the top of all pages, the edit summary now allows limited wiki text including wiki links and interwiki links, the table of contents now has a "show/hide" option, and "link to" records now also include links via redirect.
* Spam handling. Optional integration with Project Honeypot is now available, and other minor updates should help reduce spam contributions.
* Support for custom tags and templates. JAMWiki 1.2 provides the ability for developers to create custom tags, and for the HTML of elements like the table of contents to be changed via message format files. See http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/Help:Tag extensions for additional details.
* Upgrade simplifications. Work is ongoing to simplify the upgrade process by moving configuration and other files to the JAMWiki system directory, with the eventual goal of making upgrades as simple as initial setup.
* Image/File storage. Images can now be stored in the JAMWiki system directory or directly in the database instead of only in the web server or app server docroots.
* Updated caching. JAMWiki now uses finer-grained configuration of caches, including the ability to set cache limits as a percentage of heap memory to improve performance while eliminating out of memory situations reported by some users.

JAMWiki 1.1 Released

After more than seven months of development the action-packed JAMWiki 1.1 release (code name "My Dog Pancho") is now available for download. This release is a major release that contains significant new features as well as bug fixes and enhancements including:

* Improved spam & problem user handling. Sites that face attacks from spambots and problematic users now have the option of enabling reCAPTCHA for combatting spambots on the account creation and edit pages, and JAMWiki now also includes a spam honeypot to catch some bot spam. Additionally, support has been added for temporarily or permanently blocking users and IP addresses from editing the wiki as a way of combating problem contributors.
* Search enhancements. JAMWiki has upgraded to Lucene 3.3 and now offers the ability to filter search results by namespace. Search accuracy and performance should also be improved.
* Image gallery support. Support has been added for the Mediawiki <gallery> tag, allowing users to add image galleries to topics.
* UI updates. Various UI changes throughout JAMWiki should improve usability. Changes include a new editing toolbar that offers additional capabilities and a more intuitive look and feel, a new "View Source" tab that allows users without editing permission to view the wiki syntax for a topic, changes to display of external links to match Mediawiki behavior, the ability to automatically display links to other virtual wikis on the Special:RecentChanges page, and several other minor updates.
* Administrative updates. In addition to the ability to block problem users and IP addresses admins can now permanently purge topic versions using the Special:Manage tools, and the contents of previously-deleted topics can be viewed from the Special:Manage page.
* Performance improvements. Users of the default HSQL database should see significant performance improvements due to the upgrade to HSQL 2.2. Other minor improvements throughout the application should offer slightly better performance versus previous JAMWiki releases for all users.
* Custom parser tag support. Changes to the parser have made it possible for developers to create HTML-like custom tags that can be integrated to a wiki via simple configuration updates. This feature is still experimental but will hopefully eventually allow sites to have greater flexibility over the types of content that can be rendered.
* More. An array of translation updates, bug fixes, enhancements, and cleanups.... read more

JAMWiki 1.0 Released

After seven months of development the always excitable JAMWiki 1.0 release (code name "JAMWiki") is now available for download. This release is a major release that contains significant new features as well as bug fixes and enhancements:

* Mediawiki syntax compatibility improvements. JAMWiki 1.0 is being tested against test data that includes thousands of topics from multiple language versions of existing Mediawiki sites to ensure that syntax parsing is as close to Mediawiki as possible. In particular, many template processing issues have been resolved and new syntax support has been added for HTML heading tags (<h1>, <h2>, etc) and the <onlyinclude> tag. New parser function support includes {{#switch}} and {{#ifexist}}.
* Shared image repositories. Sites that make use of virtual wikis will now be able to specify one virtual wiki as a shared repository for images. Other virtual wikis can then reference those images as if they were on the same virtual wiki, eliminating the need to upload to two different places.
* UI updates. The diff and history pages now more-closely match Mediawiki with links to the previous diff, author information, and other useful information displayed. Additionally, the UI of the admin screens now uses tabs for better organization, making it easier to manage an installation.
* Virtual wiki enhancements. Several long-awaited capabilities are now in place for virtual wikis, including the ability to specify logos, titles, and meta descriptions that are specific to a virtual wiki.
* Image processing enhancements. A new image resizing algorithm produces images of much higher quality while offering slightly better performance and less memory usage.
* Interwiki enhancements. A new option allows interwiki links of the form [[wikipedia:Main Page]] to render in a toolbox in the left nav, matching the behavior found on Mediawiki sites. The old JAMWiki behavior can be re-enabled through a configuration option in the Special:Admin tool.
* Performance improvements. Ongoing performance work is aimed at making this the fastest and most scalable JAMWiki release yet.
* Build improvements. For developers, Michael Osipov has significantly improved the Maven build scripts.
* More. An array of translation updates, bug fixes, enhancements, and cleanups.... read more
