I haven't used Debian, so I'm not sure if this is done automatically when packages are installed. Export these as environment variables. The documentation states that I could do this from .xinitrc, but that didn't work for me. I had to use the environment variable files in Gentoo that are located under /etc/env.d/ I guess the location would differ on Debian.
