I think you'll need the scim-qtimm package too. I am not sure that's the name 
of the package in Debian though, but I should be close enough.

Did you set the environment variables? I haven't used Debian, so I'm not sure 
if this is done automatically when packages are installed.

Export these as environment variables. The documentation states that I could 
do this from .xinitrc, but that didn't work for me. I had to use the 
environment variable files in Gentoo that are located under /etc/env.d/  I 
guess the location would differ on Debian.
