It would be easier to start and stop recordings if it could be done by just clicking on one of the recording indicator icons in the main window rather than having to start and stop via the file / recorders menu options.

Easier but I don't like the precedent. Clicking the DJ level indicator opens the mic?

I'm not advocating that - there's be no need anyway as opening the mic is already available with a single click from the main window. I think you should be able to start/stop recording streams from the main windw with a single click as its a bit tricky to navigate to the record stream menu and easy to mess up and click the wrong stream in the heat of the moment.

Which is why I made it hard. Click carelessly and you might disconnect the stream without realising it.

    Anyway:
'Stream set connected'+'One-shot/toggle button' bound to CTRL+SHIFT+1 for stream 1 should be easy enough.

    That's a good point.

One final suggestion here then - what about if Start/Stop recording was made available under a context menu for each of the 4 stream recording indicators?

That would improve mouse-only accessibility whilst reducing the risk of accidentally stop/starting recording a stream.

That would work but I would be duplicating the menus that you said were fiddly in the first place although with one less menu level.

No you wouldn't. The File -> Recorders menu lists the 'Start recording' options for all streams. My suggestion is that when you right click on a stream recording indicator icon, it would only offer you the ability to start or stop recording that stream, hence right-clicking on the rec. icon for stream 1 would either say:

    Start recording stream 1

    or

    Stop recording stream 1

Depending on its current state. Notice how I have included the stream number in those examples, so it is made clear which stream icon you right-clicked on.

That would require all streams could be recorded. Six simultaneous recordings of the same material seems silly. It breaks the way I have the recorders set up where I can have a potentially low quality stream capture and a high quality archive recording. Two recorders is enough. I can squeeze two recording indicator lights into a small space which is also a bonus.
