By default, I think it should be a file with a '.log' suffix. The above 'assert' implies that htdig is choking when it tries to read in the contents of a progress log. Since you killed the dig after running into significant problems with the URLs that it was trying to process, it is not unlikely that you ended up with log that is somehow corrupt.
