I have an x86 laptop running 64-bit ubuntu 10.10. I plugged in the
robovero via USB cable, and applied 5v power via the battery
connection.

The actual "JTAG" (I'm assuming that this is the hardware that you're
referring to), is builtin to the robovero itself and uses the onboard
FTDI chip.

Just for reference, you can see the connection from the FTDI to the
JTAG pins on page 5 of the schematics. So no extra hardware required
:)
