I left out some important details. I was updating uboot and buildroot when all this happened. I had a roboaudiostix and a tweener connected during the process. If I disconnect the roboaudiostix the connex400xm boots the new uboot/build root and everything works fine. However, it will not work through the roboaudiostix past the point described below. I actually have two connex400xm and both give the same behavior after the update.
